Substance - "the meaning or gist as of speech or writing" this is the beginning of my current fine art project; I have followed this by layering text upon photographs. The text used was initially comical quotations, inspired by Richard Prince and Ed Ruscha. I had collected these quotations from friends over two years and the images were also collected from my life as I take a camera everywhere. The transition into Photoshop began with attempting a more polished version of early works of coastal views, portraits and landscapes. The quotations also transferred into more darker comic lines and desperate, humanist quotations that were inspired by the confessions sent to "post secrets.com". Originally I worked with black and white images however as my work progressed I began to experiment with colour meanings to relate the image to the quotation in a more subtle method. After this I began to produce new photographs surrounding the idea of morbidity and death, as this is the direction my quote list has traveled in. I have begun with a series of dying flowers to link with the culture of flowers being present in death. The current series of photographs I am working with are of butterflies, living and dead. I have concentrated on the length of quotations to work better with the images by using short or single words.

My reasons for choosing this course are varied. The idea of living within a large city would provide constant inspiration to my fine art work. Another reason is that previous students work from the university was of high quality and very inspirational. People say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover however I instantly felt at home in the studios and felt that Manchester Metropolitan would be the perfect place for me to thrive in my fine art work.
